Yak 54 EP

What do you get when you cross a little "Common Sense" and an all out 3D profile plane in a park flyer size? The Common Sense RC Yak 54 EP!

Common Sense RC has taken great steps in helping newcomers to the electric side of the hobby have a hassle-free and enjoyable experience. With their "EZ Match" system and quality hardware, you can't go wrong, and that’s really proven in this version of the Yak 54. As you read this review I think you will find the Yak 54 EP to be an exceptional value for your money.

The Yak 54 EP goes together very easily. The included instruction manual is thoroughly illustrated and provides you with more than enough information to make the Yak 54 EP an enjoyable build. One or two evenings is all it should take for the average modeler. The included hardware set is more than adequate for this airplane. Building the rudder/vertical stab is very straightforward. The CA hinge slots were already precut. All I had to do was drill a small hole for the tail skid. Next up was the horizontal stabilizer. I removed the covering from the precut slot on the fuselage, aligned the stabilizer and drilled two small holes for the bolts that are used to secure it. Again the CA hinges were preinstalled, and the CA hinge slots where precut.

This brings me to what I think is the greatest feature of this plane and why it's such a great value for your money. Common Sense RC has essentially made the Yak 54 EP a modular airplane. Everything on the plane can be easily replaced in the event of a crash. Just remove the bolts on the broken part, cut the CA hinges, and pull it out. Even the fuselage can be replaced without damaging any other component. Common Sense RC has all the parts readily available for purchase on their website.

This plane has been designed from the ground up to be a 3D performer. I have found the flying characteristics of the Yak 54 EP to be rock solid. It can be flown in just about any small area and does not require much speed. Its light weight and large flying surfaces makes it a little harder to handle in moderate winds.

With the recommended power set, this plane will literally jump off the ground. I found very little use for the tail skid. I have my Yak slightly tail heavy which requires that I keep some power applied when landing. I'm happy to say that it will harrier in nicely to the ground. The landing gear on this plane works very well. I have had a few profile planes where the landing gear would bend or detach from the airplane, but not the Yak. On hard landings the landing gear will flex, but not break. I did break the plastic hub on one of the supplied wheels on my 3rd landing, and I have since replaced them.

Is this for beginner? Absolutely not! This plane was born to fly 3D. While it could be tamed down some, it does not show (nor should it) any of the self righting characteristics and stability of a trainer. However, I do think the ease of replacing parts along with the park flyer size of this plane makes it a "perfect" 3D trainer.
